Preface – What are we trying to do at ekCoffee.com?

As 2009 rolled around, something unfamiliar, but interesting, started happening. As many of our friends started getting hitched one after the other (like a falling pack of cards!), many others found themselves coming to terms with their resistance thus far to dive into the murky waters of the great Indian arranged marriage system. Obviously, the said friends hadn’t managed to snag and convince a willing bakra/bakri to enter into holy matrimony with them. This also led us to realize that since the time all of us left college, the opportunities to meet single people were fairly limited, outside of our workplaces and friend circle.

As the mid to late 20s dawn, we are left to grapple with the dreaded onslaught (or lack thereof) of rishteys and eligible boys and girls our well-meaning parents bring to us. For the brave and independent ones who want more choice, the matrimonial sites are all that is left. Is that the best there is? The best there could be?

Whatever happened to meeting someone interesting, getting to know them over time, and building a relationship on your terms?

Not that the majority of us urban, progressive-thinking professionals wouldn’t like that. The problem is where on earth (rather in our big, crowded cities) do you meet someone you may fancy and actually like?

The answer, as we believe, lies in creating a fresh, innovative, and safe place to meet people. It is time to look beyond the matrimonial and matchmaking sites, arranged marriages and such.

We started working on ekCoffee soon after this realization. It took us a few months to build something; however we knew we could do better. After thinking deeply about and working hard on it, we are closing in. We would really love it if you signed up for an invite on http://ekcoffee.com.

  1. @ the ekCoffee crew,

Man, it’s downright spooky the way you guys summed up the 25+ crisis…the quarter life crisis, as i call it – seeing that I’m right in the middle of it.
I’ve faced the well meaning aunts bit, thankfully my parents are much cooler.

The site definitely sounds way better than all those shady (no pun intended) ones out there, but still you can’t help but feel a little wary, right?

Btw, your top 10 reasons are spot on.

  2. Thats actually interesting..specially if you are targeting the 25+ somethings. The Blog definitely attracts my attention and the one that talks about how to write your profile, the do’s and dont’s (giggles). I hope people here take notice. Wonder who created this website to start with? A bunch of IIM grads?? IITs?? Who has contributed for the blog?? Are you working for Barista??

    • Shweta,
You so _get_ what we’re trying to do at ekCoffee (*hug*). We will put out some engaging commentary on the blog over time and the hope is that it makes for interesting reading. The Do’s and Dont’s post was crafted by one of our team – let’s call him N for now (he says he wants to come up with a cooler sounding pen name).
We’re not associated with Barista in any shape or form. We’re a few young entrepreneurs who just want to build a simple, fresh, fun way of meeting someone interesting – something that we wish existed and was relevant to a modern generation of Indians, unlike the shaady (pun intended ;) ) type of sites out there.
